Let There be Depth!
I don’t care that for the most part I was watching second and third string players. I don’t care that this game meant absolutely nothing. It was Seattle Seahawks football, and for the first time in over six months it graced the screen of my dirty, dust-covered television.
Life’s good.
The Seahawks kicked off their preseason last night with a week 1 romping of the San Diego Chargers by a score of 31-10, in a performance that can best be described as enigmatic, if not effective.
Both the offense and defense were sloppy out of the gate; with the offense producing little in the way of yardage and even less in the way of time of possession. Only when the disinterested and all but assured starters were pulled off the field did this team start to sustain some pressure on offense and wreak havoc on ‘d.
As both squads delved deeper into their respective depth charts the game became increasingly lop-sided for Seattle. Seattle’s second stringers were better than San Diego’s and it was men against boys when Seattle went so far as their third stringers.
Basically, this team is really deep at every position and it showed.
I can only imagine how hard it will be for the coaching staff to make their cuts as this preseason keeps on trucking along.
I’m not sure who they should cut at this point, but if I were in charge the three player’s I’m about to list certainly wouldn’t face such a faith…
3. LB John Lotulelei
Don’t let his meager stats line (3 tackles) fool you, this kid came to play. The un-drafted, long locked linebacker out of Nevada made an impression on just about every play, be it on special teams or defense alike.

While it’s hard to focus on anyone else when John Lotulelei is on the field due to his Polamalu-esque head of hair, that really isn’t such a bad thing.
This kid likes to hit, and lets the other team know it on every play. I’m not going to come out and predict he’ll give Bobby Wagner a run for his money, but he’d make a nice backup nonetheless.
2. DE Benson Mayowa
No Cliff Avril, no Chris Clemons… No problem! The LEO position is in good hands in the absence of those two. For the better part of the second half of the game Benson Mayowa was tearing the Charger’s offensive line to shreds, getting 1.5 sacks (I thought two, but the NFL website says otherwise) in their absence. It really was something to see.
He displayed great length and speed around the edge to take down the infamous “Clipboard Jesus”, otherwise known as Charlie Whitehurst.
1. QB Tarvaris Jackson
Welcome back to Seattle, Tarvaris.
I’d say we missed you, but that’s taking things a little too far.
In all seriousness though, of all six quarterbacks to make an appearance in this game it was Tarvaris Jackson who stood out.
On two separate occasions he connected with Stephen Williams for receptions of 41 and 42 yards, with the second one resulting in a touchdown.
On the night Jackson went 8 of 9 for 128 yards and 2 TD’s, with a passer rating of 158.3 – in case you didn’t know, that’s as high as that metric goes.
Brady Quinn, your move.
